Filming and Photography in Rowntree Park

Rowntree Park offers a stunning backdrop for photography and film. The park is a ‘managed space’ and therefore permissions for certain types of film and photography should be sought. The park is managed by the council with the Friends of Rowntree Park charity responsible for maintaining some key areas and organising all events and activities. Therefore we, the Friends of Rowntree Park ask that all visitors, commercial photographers and media follow the guidelines below.

Personal use

You are welcome to take photographs and film in the park for personal use. Personal photos taken in the park shouldn’t be used for commercial gain without prior consent.

Personal photoshoots

Photoshoots with professional photographers for their personal/commercial use, for example pre-wedding sessions or family portraits can take place in Rowntree Park – please contact us for permission in advance.

It’s important to check dates with us as we have a range of events and activities that are booked into the park and therefore communicating what’s on that day and areas to avoid is important.

There is usually no charge for very small scale shoots (one couple/family) but we do suggest that you make a donation to support our charity who help maintain and improve the site you are using. If it’s a mini shoot involving a few people on the day – small charges may apply and can be discussed depending on the size, nature and purpose. We want to support small businesses, but also hope you want to support our charity that help maintain the space you are using.

Commercial photo shoots

If you are thinking of a commercial shoot at Rowntree Park, please make sure this is booked in with us. Depending on the size, scale and purpose of the session – varying charges will apply.  We also ask that you please consider other visitors when taking photos or filming. More info will be sent once the booking forms have been received. Sessions should ideally be booked in 28 days prior to the event.

Media filming and photography

Film crews and press photographers can shoot in the park with prior permission – there are specific forms to complete through Make it York on behalf of the City of York Council. When filing in Rowntree Park, these forms will be passed onto us at Friends of Rowntree Park along with the discussion regarding fees. Sessions should ideally be booked in 28 days prior to the event.
