The Lost Words Project

The Young Friends of Rowntree Park are running ‘The Lost Words’ poetry project for children aged 7-14.

The project was inspired by the book of the same name by Robert MacFarlene –
“Once upon a time, words began to disappear from the language of children” – words linked to natural world around them such as acorn, conker, raven, willow, and wren. “The words were becoming lost: no longer vivid in children’s voices, no longer alive in their stories”.

The Young Friends of Rowntree Park want to re-engage young people with nature and celebrate its beauty through creative writing and poetry.  We are offering young people the opportunity to attend a workshop with local acclaimed poets and creative writers:

Miss Tycal‘- Organiser of creative storytelling workshops in York for children, to inspire children with wonderment – a ‘children’s purveyor of knowledge and ideas’.  Also a primary teacher/literacy specialist for 19 years

Once the children have completed their poems, their work will be celebrated in a range of ways including displays in the cafe (and park), on social media and through our website.
